We left Calais early, timed to make the most of the tidal stream sweeping westward across the Dover Strait. The lock gates were open, and after a short wait for clearance, we were off, easing out of the harbour into the morning light, engine ticking over and sails ready.
The wind was light from the southwest, and visibility was excellent — ideal conditions for crossing one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. We hoisted full sail, but with the breeze mostly on the nose and barely stirring, we kept the engine running to maintain a consistent pace.
Crossing the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) is always the focal point of this route. We held a course close to 330°, making sure to cross the lanes at a right angle, as required. AIS was a blessing, giving us early warnings of fast-moving commercial traffic, ferries, and the odd cargo vessel steaming past at impressive speed.
The separation zone between the two traffic lanes offered a short breather, a quiet patch where the engine note and seagulls were the only sounds. Then it was back to scanning for traffic as we crossed the east-bound lane.
We sighted the white cliffs of Dover not long after. They always feel a bit magical — a blend of homecoming and drama, especially when the sunlight hits them just right. We contacted Dover Port Control on VHF Channel 74, as required, and received clearance to enter via the Western Entrance.
Once inside, the marina team was quick to respond and had a berth waiting. The familiar shape of Dover Marina, with its welcoming arms and easy approach, marked the end of a smooth and satisfying Channel hop. Mooring up alongside, it was time for a late lunch and a quiet moment to enjoy being back on UK shores.

- Tide timing: Crucial — plan for slack or favourable current to avoid overfalls and strong head seas
- Arrival at Dover: Entry usually via Western Entrance, marina staff helpful and responsive
