Ouddorp to Oude Tonge 16.07.13

We left Ouddorp Jachthaven on a sunny morning around 11am. The harbour itself is well-sheltered, peaceful, and has that classic Dutch charm – a great spot to stock up the boat, and enjoy a brekkie before casting off.

Once you’re out of the marina, you are back in the Grevelingenmeer, with its wide, open waters and stunning views all around. It’s a relaxed stretch to cruise, especially if the wind’s in your favour. Depending on the season, you might be sharing the water with anything from weekend sailors and paddleboarders to serious racers stretching their sails.

As you make your way east across the Grevelingen, it’s worth hugging the northern edge near Stampersplaat or Dwars in de Weg if you’re in no rush – both make great stopovers if you fancy a swim, picnic, or even an overnight with just the birds for company. The water’s usually flat, and you’ll find a decent anchorage with good holding.

Eventually, you’ll reach the lock at Krammersluizen, where you’ll need to wait for your turn through. It can get busy in peak times, but the system works efficiently. VHF contact is straightforward, and the lock operators are helpful.

Once through the lock, you’re in the Volkerak, and things start to feel a bit more tidal and purposeful. You’re back in moving water again, so depending on your timing, you’ll want to catch the current heading north.

The final leg to Oud-Tonge Harbour is a calm one, tucked off the main channel via a narrow entrance. It’s a snug harbour, well-protected, and with easy access to shore for provisions or a wander around. Mooring is straightforward, and the harbourmaster’s usually about or reachable if you need a hand.

All in all, it’s a satisfying little voyage, a mix of open water, quiet anchorages, a bit of lock work, and then a peaceful destination. Just the kind of day that reminds you why you sail in the Holland.
