On Route to Vlissingen

Nothing very exciting to report. On route, we stopped at

  • Brighton
  • Dover
  • Calais – Layover for tide
  • Nieuwport
  • Vlissingen

The passage from Brighton to Dover was interesting. We were with the tide so pretty quick averaging 9.6 knots (7.7 through the water). But after leaving Brighton the fog came down and we didn’t see land (although we were about 200 meters from land at Dungeness) until we were 200 meters off the Dover entrance.

Upon arriving in The Netherlands (Holland) we were against a vicious 4 knot tide and we were making a measly 4 knots over the ground. So we only had 1 mile to go to the entrance to the Vlissingen canal that takes us up to Veer when we saw the marina at Vlissingen.

Well, this place is definitely worth a stop. A warm welcome (as usual) and a nice marina that is locked in. For us €31 inc elec and wifi. The town is literally 2 mins walk from the boat. The town has everything you need including a fair sized Albert Heijn supermarket. The 2 days we spent here was just what we needed to recover from the trip and on the second day, there was a carnival type thing going on where there was lots of free bouncy castles which Lucy (our 5-year-old) loved.

Amazingly, our Dutch friends Walter and Yvonne were picking up a part 5 minutes away (by pure coincidence) and we had a coffee in the town with them.
