After thrilling fans across the globe, SailGP is returning to UK shores, and once again, it’s Portsmouth that gets to play host. Known as the Formula 1 of sailing, this cutting-edge racing series will bring high-octane action to the Solent on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July 2025, marking the start of its European season.
If you haven’t yet experienced a SailGP weekend in person, this is your chance. With breathtaking speeds, close tactical racing, and a festival-style atmosphere on shore, SailGP is unlike anything else in the world of sport.
What is SailGP?
SailGP is a global sailing championship featuring national teams racing in identical, high-performance foiling catamarans called F50s. These boats are technological marvels, capable of flying above the water and reaching speeds of over 60 miles per hour. The result is fast, intense racing that’s designed with spectators in mind, taking place just metres from the shore.
Now in its fifth season, SailGP has become a fixture on the international sporting calendar, visiting cities such as Sydney, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, New York, and Abu Dhabi. This summer, the tour heads to Portsmouth, one of the most iconic sailing venues in the world.
Why Portsmouth?
Portsmouth is no stranger to elite sailing events, and for good reason. With its deep maritime roots and ideal racing conditions in the Solent, it offers a natural arena for this type of high-speed, close-quarters racing. The city’s seafront provides excellent viewing points for fans, and the atmosphere is always electric.
The 2025 SailGP Championship will see Portsmouth host the eighth regatta of the global season. With twelve international teams vying for points, the racing is expected to be tighter than ever.
